We did a picture where it is raining and sunny because in this chapter Gatsby and Daisy show good and bad emotions. In the beginning, it is pouring rain which is significant because Gatsby is about to see Daisy and hes scared and nervous. About a half an hour later, the sun shines again. Gatsby is with Daisy and things are going very good. When Gatsby and Daisy are in the room together, the sun is still shining which shows their emotions for one another. When Daisy is about to leave, the rain is falling which shows sadness.
"'Five years next November.' The automatic quality of Gatsby's answer set us all back at least another minute"(92).
The fact that Gatsby knows exactly how long it has been since the last time he has seen Daisy proves how much he has missed her. He shows that he really loves her and has been counting down the days until he can finally meet with her again. This creates an awkward silence between Gatsby and Daisy.
"When he realized what I was talking about, that there were twinkle-bells of sunshine in the room, he smiled"(94).
The sunshine is symbloizing Daisy and Gatsby. Things are going well between the two of them so the rain stopped and the sun came out.
"'I'm glad, Jay.' Hes throat, full of aching, grieving beauty, told only her unexpected joy"(94).
Daisy is so overwhelemed and happy to see and fianlly be able to talk to Gatsby after so many years. She doesn't know how to react and is so glad and taken back by his arrival.
"Possibly it had occured to him that the colossal signifigance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her"(98).
The green light that burns all night at the end of Daisys dock would always seem so far away to Gatsby. Now that they are reunited, it doesn't seem so far.
Symbolism: Color
In Chapter Five, there is a lot of symbolism having to do with colors. On page 89, the color silver and gold represent Gatsby. This color represents wealth and Gatsby's love for money. On page 90, the color lavender represents Daisy. Lavender shows her beauty and delicate traits. The color blue, also on page 90, represents Daisy and her being gloomy and sad. The color gold, found on page 97, represents Gatsby. Gold also shows Gatsby's rich side and wealth. Also on page 97, Gatsby shows many-colors which brings out the mysterious side of him. The color pink on page 99 represents Daisy and her sense of love and passion.
